Before hitting the road with your motorhome, you’ve likely checked off all the essentials—engine compartment, tires, lights, mirrors, and towing connections. But there’s one crucial checklist item you might be missing: the California Air Resources Board (CARB) Clean Truck Check requirements. Ensuring compliance with these requirements is essential for meeting emission standards and avoiding potential fines. Read on to find out how to make sure your motorhome is fully compliant and ready for your next adventure!

Clean truck check testing and assistance needs to be at the top of your pre-trip checklist. The newest diesel engine requirements apply to almost every diesel fuel heavy duty vehicle, and alternative fuel heavy duty vehicle, weighing over 14,000 pounds. When your motorhome is not compliant with the Clean Truck Check rules, the DMV automatically places a registration hold on your vehicle. Other actions may also be enforced. Bypassing your responsibility to test and register your motorhome’s emissions compliance nixes your road trip plans before you can even get started.

To avoid registration holds, you’ll need to make sure that your vehicle is reported to the Clean Truck Check Vehicle inspection System (CTC-VIS) Portal, annual emissions compliance testing is completed, and annual compliance fees are paid up.

To get on board with the Clean Truck Check requirements, read these facts:

  • Annual reporting to the CTC-VIS and compliance fees are due at your motorhome’s compliance deadline each year.
  • Emissions testing requirements begin October 1, 2024. Get your vehicle tested at least 90 days before its DMV registration expiration date.
  • Testing is required for all motorhomes with California registrations by the DMV registration expiration, and out-of-state vehicles have deadlines based on the last four digits of their vehicle’s VIN number.
